Mary Oliver who died this past month in January was a guide or a mentor for me. She has been with me through important passages in my life. When I was going through a very difficult and painful divorce her poem The Journey gave me courage. Years later when I had been beaten up by life and was full of remorse and regret, Wild Geese set me on the right path. I memorized both these poems and thought of them many times d when I was in need. Now that I am on in years, When Death Comes is my companion. I never met Mary Oliver in person, but I used to travel to Cape Cod every spring and it made me happy to know she was just a few miles down the road in Provincetown, climbing the sand dunes with a notebook in her hand.
I see Orpheus as the God of poetry and you can find him in the birth chart by looking for personal planets or the ascendant in Pisces, significant planetary aspects to Neptune and planets in the 12th house. Mary Oliver has the Sun and Venus conjunct Neptune. We don’t have her birth time so we don’t know her ascendant sign or if any planets are in her 12th house. But the Sun and Venus conjunct Neptune is enough of a signature to show someone with a poetic, imaginative nature.
Rest in Peace Mary and Thank you.
